"I have had the hardest time explaining to my own family what I do"

I think many who'll read your comment can relate to what you're saying. To solve that challenge, I just stopped mixing family and business.

"Since they don’t consider that to be a real job [...] the rest of the time will be spent on educating others"

This is a great plan. Don't spend energy on people who create a negative impact for you. As long as you're clear on what you do and it's clear to your audience, there's no reason to waste time and energy on those who 'don't get it.'

I have had the hardest time explaining to my own family what I do as a virtual assistant, so I have given up on that. Since they don't consider that to be a real job, I figure at least as long as my wife, Donna understands and the rest of the time will be spent on educating others. I've developed skills in recent months that will help me with running my own home office, and I still keep my SEB information from what I picked up in that program. The way I see it...others have made an honest living doing what they love to do, so isn't it about time I had the same opportunities?

Thanks for the link, Cristina! You have some great suggestions for explaining abstract services in a way that will make sense to potential clients.
