Making Real Changes: Life Coach, Marion Franklin
February 5th, 2007 by Cristina Favreau
To kick off my week-long series of Coaching Week blog interviews, I met up with Marion Franklin, MS, Master Certified Coach, Life Coach for an interview. She lives in Tarrytown, NY (about 30 minutes North of NYC) and has been coaching since 1996. Marion has two grown children who are her inspiration for personal growth and from whom she learns new things all the time.
So Marion, why and how did you first get into coaching?
I got into coaching through courses and classes in my own self-development and transformation that were delivered by a coach who then offered to teach us how to do what he did. I was the first to sign up!Why did you choose to be a Life Coach?
I chose Life Coaching because it aligns with who I am and what I believe. No matter where or who we are coaching, it’s about life. Even those who want to talk about career or employees, it still comes back to relationships, motivation, teams, etc. In every case, we are dealing with regular, every day human being situations.Who’s your ideal client? Who specifically do you coach? Who is your target market?
I especially love to work with women who keep saying yes when they really mean no. I love working with people who need and want to put some joy and fun into their lives. They bounce from work to home and don’t quite know how to socialize, be in conversation, and stand up for themselves. Yet, I work with so many different situations because what people initially think is their ‘problem’ often is just a symptom of something else.My other target market consists of people who want to become coaches or coaches who don’t feel confident. I offer an ICF-approved 36 hour coach training program that teaches masterful coaching skills and instills confidence. I also offer an ongoing mentor group for those who want to practice coaching and share client challenges. The outcome is consistently ‘feeling more confident’ and delivering more value to clients.
Sounds like you’re very clear on who it is you work best with. Why don’t you share with our readers your 30-second intro. How do you answer the question, “So, what exactly is it that you do as a Life Coach?”
I help people go from good to great. My 30 second intro varies, but sometimes sounds like: “I’ve noticed that many people wind up doing things they don’t really want to do but they feel obligated to say yes. I work with those people so they can feel confident about saying no without guilt.”My other intro is sometimes “I also train coaches to become masterful through a unique and interesting style that isn’t in the marketplace. I only accept 4 students at a time for highly customized and individualized learning.”
Marion, what does coaching mean to you and how would describe what coaching is to someone who is not familiar with it?
Coaching is a collaborative relationship. Together we figure out what is true for you so that you can make better choices and live in a way that really suits who you are. It’s a way of helping you to live and be your best.I love that description! It’s very simple. What is the biggest objection you hear about coaching? How do you overcome this objection?
The biggest objection is that it’s not covered by insurance the way therapy is. I usually say something like coaching is not a lifetime process. It helps to move you forward with action steps so you can reach your vision sooner. It’s an investment in moving you forward rather than dwelling in the past and you will always receive value every time we have a conversation. In your opinion, what’s the greatest value of working with a Life Coach?
The coaching can cover any topic or area and still be meaningful and helpful. Everyone is seeking ‘happiness’ and fulfillment and life coaching encompasses that. How much do you charge per month? Why is your fee worth it?
My fees depend upon the length of the session and the frequency. Typically, I charge anywhere from $400 – $500 per month for four sessions. Some people choose three sessions, bi-weekly, or shorter sessions to reduce the cost. It’s worth it because we get to the heart of the matter quickly and value is always provided to move someone forward – if that’s what they really want.I always offer two scholarships at any given time for those who TRULY can’t afford my regular rates. That has paid off more than I could have imagined through referrals and the rewards of working with clients who are exceptionally motivated.
Marion, before we sign off, what else would you like to share with our audience about Life Coaching?
Coaching is basically meant for healthy people who want more than just an okay life. It is not about solutions and fixing problems. That implies that people are ‘broken.’ Coaching is about living your best life.
