Sarah SchultzToday, I’m putting Relationship/Personal Development Coaching to light. Helping me do that is Sarah Schultz, a fellow coaching classmate, awesome friend and faithful coaching buddy (she helps keep me honest and makes sure I have fun doing it).

Sarah, why don’t you introduce yourself?
My name is Sarah Schultz, and I am a Personal Development Coach with New Heights Life Coaching. I work with “quarterlifers” (twenty- and thirty-something adults) to create meaning and find passion in their relationships, careers and in their lives. I now reside in Park City, UT, where I also spend my free time as a Snowboard Instructor at Park City Mountain Resort.

Now, you started off as a Relationship Coach, but are calling yourself a Personal Development coach. Why don’t you tell us a little more about that?
I chose to specialize in personal development coaching because I believe our modern culture requires it. Quarterlifers in particular are disconnected from the world: they watch more TV, they spend more time on the internet and more time at work. They spend less time with friends and loved ones, less time developing hobbies that fulfill them, and less time considering what would make them truly excited about life. Instead, they settle for a mediocre existence, wasting precious years where they could be following their bliss. My mission is to help every quarterlifer build a foundation for a life that exceeds their wildest dreams!

Specifically, what type of people do you coach?
I coach anyone in their twenties or thirties who is tired of waiting until “later” to be happy. I coach quarterlifers who are committed to creating an amazing life for themselves right now. I focus on three sub-specialties:

Relationship Coaching: I help individuals and couples create a solid foundation for lasting committed relationships
Life Balance: I help individuals create a fulfilling balance between their career and personal aspirations
Transitions: I help individuals manage the stress of a major life transition (such as having a baby or returning to school)

Why don’t you share with us your 30-second intro? How do you answer the question, “So, what exactly is it that you do?”
“I coach people in their twenties and thirties who are tired of waiting until later to be happy. I help them create a life they love, starting right now.”

My background is in marriage and family therapy, so most of what I do revolves around relationship coaching. I help a lot of couples learn the skills they need to build a lasting and happy relationship together. I also help singles figure out why they can’t find a relationship that works for them. Most of the time, people who are having relationship problems are also having a hard time balancing their work life with their personal needs. People in their 20s and 30s are usually going through a lot of major life changes, such as getting married or having a baby, so sometimes we’ll look at how that stress effects their relationships, and how they can manage that stress effectively.

You sound very passionate about this group of people. Sarah, what does coaching mean to you personally? How do you describe coaching to someone who is not familiar with coaching?
Coaching helps you get from where you are to where you want to be. The world moves pretty fast these days – there’s not a lot of time for people to think about what they want their life to look like. The coaching process allows you to slow down a little to make sure make sure you’re taking the easiest and most fun path toward your goals. As a coach, I’m not an expert in your life (you are). Instead, I’m an expert in change. I’m trained to help you a) overcome whatever is holding you back from being happiest, and b) walk side-by-side with you as you find new ways of creating a fulfilling and fun life!

I like the “easiest and most fun” part…! So, what is the greatest misconception you hear about coaching and how do you answer it?
Greatest misconception: “So coaching is the same as therapy?”

Answer to this question: Actually, coaching is quite different than therapy. In therapy, you work on resolving issues from your past that are preventing you from functioning effectively in your life today. As a Coach, I work with fully-functioning clients – they just have a vision for their future that they can’t quite create on their own. Also, therapists are required to diagnose you and treat you based on a whole classification of symptoms. As a Coach, I believe every person is completely unique, so we work on overcoming any weaknesses that are holding you back specifically, and developing your strengths so you can make the absolute most of your life.

In your opinion, what’s the greatest value of working with a coach like yourself?
Personal development coaching simply helps people start living a life that fulfills and excites them right now. No more waiting to be happy. No more struggling through life. No more settling. No more making excuses or accepting a mediocre existence. And as soon as they start taking steps toward creating happiness in their life, they will attract all sorts of other amazing opportunities that they probably can’t even imagine right now!

How much do you charge per month? Why is your fee worth it?
I have a wide range of services available to cater to all financial situations. I charge $425 for four 50-minute private coaching sessions per month. My clients can also choose to attend bi-weekly sessions for $225/month (1 session every other week). I also offer coaching groups and teleseminars for those clients who would like to receive coaching, but cannot afford the private fees (and in some cases, a group can be more beneficial than personal coaching anyway). Anyone can sign up for my free e-newsletter (The NHLC Monthly: Your Guide to Creating Meaning in Modern Life – register on my website at http://www.newheightslifecoaching.com), or visit my blog, The Modern Life Survival Guide: Secrets to Enjoying Life in the 21st Century, for free tips, advice and hot topics (http://newheightslifecoaching.typepad.com/blog).

As someone trained in marriage and family therapy, I have the formal training necessary to help people create a relationship that will last. I know the subtle nuances of a healthy relationship, and I know the red-flags inherent in doomed relationships. Being trained as a Certified Personal Coach allows me to communicate this information effectively to my clients, and work with them to progress toward their vision naturally and in a fun way. And as a quarterlifer myself, I have personal experience in dealing with the issues that come up for other twenty- and thirty-somethings today. It’s a different world for our generation, and most of the other coaches out there grew up in the baby boomer era – they just don’t get it!!

How are you celebrating Coaching Week?
I’m loving this week!!

I’m writing two articles for publication:
“How to Beat Overwhelm by Creating Calm in Your Hectic Life”
“A Fun Woman’s Story: The Decision that Changed My Life”

I’m also developing an in-person workshop with another local coach to introduce the concept of coaching to our local community. We’re offering our “Coaching 101″ course in two local adult education programs: one through the University of Utah, and another through the Park City School District. Our goal is to increase awareness about coaching to everyone in our area.

Finally, I’m teaching snowboarding lessons at Park City Mountain Resort, and spending any free time I have left getting my Level 1 Instructor Certification (which basically means I get to go on a bunch of free training rides around the highest-rated resort in the world, with some of the best snowboard trainers on the planet)… not a bad way to spend my week!

Sounds like fun!!!

  • I think cannot do this job. Giving advice to a a person is really hard because that may affect the result of his/her problem . I would be nice if you fix it.
  • the personal coaching of the trainer is quite resonable for few month's.
