Teri-Lynn AndersonWe are half-way through Coaching Week, and continuing with my daily blog-interviews, today I spoke with Teri-Lynn Anderson, executive leadership coach from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She has been coaching for over 3 years now and one of her biggest passions is providing a loving, safe environment for foster teenage girls.

Why did you choose executive leadership coaching? What makes this type of coaching different from other types?
I am very passionate about people recognizing themselves and stepping into the world as leaders. We often tend to think that leaders are political figures, or influential celebrities, etc. But we forget that leadership is an every day choice. I love coaching people on that.

This coaching is different because although we use results to measure our success, leadership is really about a way of BEING in the world, which then informs the actions we take. It’s not just about taking different action, it’s deeper than that. It goes to the root of our beliefs about ourselves and what we have to offer the world. That’s juicy to me!

“Juicy!” I like that! So, what sort of people hire an executive leadership coach?
I coach anyone from managers, to new supervisors, to c-level executives, to people in career transitions. My target market is someone in corporate America that’s saying, “Wow, is this it? Is this all there is? What’s next for me?”

What’s your 30-second intro?
The one impulse human beings have above anything else, often unspoken but always communicated is the doubt, “Am I significant? Do I matter?” I help people access and act on their innate leadership skills so that at the end of their careers, or even at the end of their lives, they can answer with conviction: I’ve lived a significant life.

Teri-Lynn, what does coaching mean to you? And, how do you describe coaching to those who don’t quite get what coaching is?
Coaching is like the etymological root of education. It is drawing out from people that which already exists in them. In order to do that, I have to invite you to go where you’ve been unwilling to go by yourself, and then go with you, ask questions you’ve been unwilling to ask, create possibilities that have been impossible until now – and then I get to have you see yourself as big and powerful as I see you as your coach, and act on that new frame of reference so that you can create unprecedented, powerful results. At the end of coaching, you should be able to say, ‘WOW I didn’t know I had it in me!’

What is the greatest myth you hear about coaching, and what’s your reply?
“Coaching is like therapy.”

No, it’s not. Therapy fixes. Coaching improves. Therapy tends to deal with dysfunctions or disorders. Coaching tends to deal with what’s already working and takes it to a higher level.

What have you seen to be the greatest value of coaching?
Working with a leadership coach has you access parts of your humanity that, for some people, you didn’t even know you had. Sometimes all a person needs is the PERMISSION to be great. Everyone has a superhero inside, and being a superhero means different things to different people. But the crux of leadership isn’t about putting out fires or saving the day, it’s the day to day extraordinary results we create just by being courageous, by going one extra step, by having THAT conversation with THAT person, by taking THAT risk, etc. To work with a leadership coach creates the accountability and framework that we sometimes need to make THAT leap.

How much do you charge per month? Why is your fee worth it?
I charge $1,000 a month for weekly 1-hour sessions. Why is my fee worth it? Wow, how do you put a price tag on a life well lived? On potential accessed? On creating the career or the relationship or the community of your dreams? I think the real question is, is your life worth it?

How are you celebrating Coaching Week?
I have the great fortune of making a living at something I was born to do. So every week is a coaching week for me because coaching is an extension of who I am. But this week in particular, I am celebrating coaching by educating people about what coaching is and isn’t and inviting them to an exploratory discussion with me in regards to coaching. Although it’s becoming more and more mainstream, there are still people out there that when I tell them I’m a coach, they say “Oooh! What sport? Girls’ soccer?” :)
