Fears of embarking on the journey
March 25th, 2007 by Cristina Favreau
Wayne Hurlbert wrote an excellent blog article on business startups entitled: Entrepreneurship: Overcoming your fears. In it, he lists four common fears people face when embarking on the journey of starting a small business:
- Losing a steady paycheck
- Lack of available time
- Personal lack of knowledge
- Lack of support of family and friends
In his article, he offers practical suggestions to overcoming those fears to achieve success.
He concludes with this thought:
Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.
The only way to help new entrepreneurs surmount their fears is to talk openly and honestly about them.
What were your fears when starting your business? Are fears standing in the way of your dream? Let’s talk.

The fear that keeps me from going out on my own right now is lack of knowledge and experience. I understand that I will never know everything nor do I want to know everything. I just want to know how much is enough? When should I just do it?
Is there a base of knowledge that someone should have before they venture out on their own or when the idea comes go for it and learn on the way?
It would nice to learn from all of you who have been there done that. I read as much as I can about being succussful and how to start a business. I try and read a book a week. The struggle comes in the application and remembering how to handle each unique situation.
Thanks so much for sharing, Ryan. You bring up very real (and common) fears and raise important points. Because I feel the issues you state and your question are so pertinent, I’ll be addressing your question and comments in a separate blog posting. Stay tuned!
