Anti-Procrastination Month: Day 3
October 3rd, 2007 by Cristina Favreau
Today’s Anti-Procrastination Month focus is all about attitude.
One of the best ways to remain stuck in procrastination is to let the Self-Downer in you dictate your feelings, thoughts and actions.
The trouble with Self-Downers is they eventually start believing their negative self-talk. They start doubting themselves. They attribute their successes to uncontrollable outside influences. They’ll turn a sincere compliment into a self-deprecation session.
You’ll know you’re in (or approaching) Self-Downing mode when you start feeling uncomfortable and disoriented with the attention your successes bring (after all, it’s not due to anything good you did… it just happened).
Dilatoriness is a sign of avoidance. You may unintentionally start sabotaging things to take the attention and responsibility off you.
Here are some ways to tell the Self-Downer in you to take a long walk off a short pier:
- Discover what triggers a shift in your attitude. Start by observing without judging yourself. You’ll notice a pattern.
- Evaluate why you’re uncomfortable with success and find ways to break the pattern.
- Graciously accept praise by saying “Thanks” then say NOTHING ELSE (it’s harder than it sounds).
- Take things one small step at a time instead of putting them off, and celebrate your wins.
- Don’t be too modest — learn to recognize and acknowledge your good work, instead of giving credit to someone or something else.
- Talk with people you consider successful and ask them their secret — How they do it?
- Act as if you can (even if you don’t believe it at first).
Being an active, intentional participant in your business will give you a positive attitude. The sooner you get involved, the better you’ll feel and the more you’ll achieve.
