Anti-Procrastination Month: Day 6
October 6th, 2007 by Cristina Favreau
Today is Saturday, so your Anti-Procrastination Month assignment is: Take a break!
When you put something off because you’re feeling bored, tired, indifferent, frustrated or discouraged, it’s time to step away from the task at hand for a while to recharge. If you feel like you’re trying hard just to get started, stop trying for a while. If not, you risk burning out.
Here are some ways to recharge without losing your momentum:
- Take a nap.
- Go for a walk.
- Call a friend.
- Spend a few hours at a bookstore.
- Watch a sitcom.
- Play with your kids.
- Pick up a long-forgotten hobby.
The possibilities are endless, so add your own to the list.
A brief respite can actually help you overcome procrastination when you’re trying too hard to come up with something. When you participate in a mindless activity, you supply your body with rest AND you give your brain a break. Instead of forcing it to do what you’re trying to make it do, taking a time-out gives your brain time and space to help you find solutions and formulate ideas so you can begin again (if you’ve ever woken up in the middle of the night with an amazing concept or solution to a problem, you understand what I’m talking about).
At times it’s good to embrace procrastination, rather than force yourself to do something you’re not up for. Just choose activities that will rejuvenate your energy and that will help get your creative juices flowing again. I’ve given you a few suggestions, but you’ll need to experiment until you find what works for you.
