The Savvy Entrepreneur » Blog Archive » Anti-Procrastination Month ‘08: Day 9

It’s Monday. What’s your procrastination plan of attack for the week? Does it include doing the boring, unfun and icky tasks first? Today’s contributors think you should.

I heard the term “Kiss the ugly frog first” from my brother, Lee Matson. Lee passed away in 2001 after complications from heart surgery. I heard him use this phrase the day before his surgery. Lee used this philosophy to get the difficult tasks out of the way so he could enjoy the rest of his day and not be distracted by an unpleasant task.Lynn R Matston, owner of The Roadkill Bingo Company

If you think for a second that you should do something and are about to put it off, drop whatever you are doing right now, and do that first. Make a habit of that process and you’ll find you’re rarely backlogged on things.Stu Mark, Senior Web Developer

Well, what I’ve found to work for me is making a conscious decision to actually do it. Most of the time, I believe that we procrastinate because the task is not one of our favorite things to do. So we put it off. Doing those things first causes me to remove all the stress from the very beginning of my day. Then, I am so much more productive for the rest of the day – not to mention a lot less stressed!Renae Bolton, PREVA – Professional Real Estate Virtual Assistant, founder of Marketing 4 Realtors

I found the suggestion in Renae Bolton's quote persuasive — putting off the hard things allows them to become or stay a source of stress. Recognizing them and getting them done instead gives a success and thus momentum to handle the rest of your day.

Some good suggestions here. Doing things now instead of putting them off is usually a good strategy. But not always.

Not all procrastination (or productivity, for that matter) is created equal, though.

It can sometimes be good to procrastinate – it can lead to less struggle, delay (counter-intuitive, but true), and more optimal functioning.

There's a new book out titled Productive Procrastination, and it describes how to do it, how to tell productive from destructive procrastination, and how to end the destruction kind. (Yes, it's available on Amazon.com.) Learn more about the concept of Procrastivity at http://www.Procrastivity.com. Wishing you optimal procrastivity!
