Public speaking is a marketing tool that keeps on giving, so get past your fear and nail every speech every time.

Most successful entrepreneurs agree that good public speaking skills are among the core techniques they need to propel their business forward. A well-delivered presentation can result in getting some extra funding, securing a new distribution channel, locking into a new referral stream or gaining new customers.

“Therapy is more like archaeology – you’re digging things up, you’re excavating, you’re looking back on wounds that might be affecting your behaviours. … And coaching is more like architecture, so you’re moving from the present and creating for the future.“

I’ve been working on getting over my fear of the media (yes, it’s the big monster in my closet).

A few weeks ago on Facebook Marketplace, J.D. Gravenor, a freelance writer for The Gazette (the largest English newspaper in Montreal), posted a request entitled Want to be profiled in the Gazette today (Wednesday)?

Facing my fear head on, I nervously replied that I was available to be interviewed. I was secretly hoping someone else got to him first. I reasoned (in my deranged mind) that I had nothing interesting or of value to share.

Wouldn’t you know it? I was the first to reply, and J.D. agreed to interview me… ouch!

On Thursday, the photographer came and on Friday, J.D. came for the interview. The story appeared in this Saturday’s Gazette; You can read the interview by clicking here.

While the focus was on apartment living in Montreal, I did manage to slip in some references to my businesses.

During the interview, I realized that media attention is not as scary as I imagined. Maybe that was just the fix I needed in order to reach out more to the media. Thanks J.D., for making the interview a painless and enjoyable experience.

Again, here’s the link to the story: They moved the the ‘burbs for the kids.

How do you deal with media attention? What is the scary monster (or monsters) in your closet?
