A: A typical coaching client is someone who wants to make changes in his or her life, and is ready to take action. You might hire a coach for yourself when you are looking for a new job, needing to improve your management skills, wanting to increase profits in your business, launching an ambitious new project, planning your retirement, or dissatisfied with some of the conditions in your life and seeking a new direction. You might hire a coach for your organization when you want to improve productivity, increase teamwork, implement new ways of working, or adjust to changing conditions.

Coaching clients are men, women, and young people, of all ages, professions, and income brackets. What they have in common is a desire for partnership, support, and strategic guidance in solving problems and achieving goals that are personally important to them.

Q: Where does someone find a qualified coach?

A: Determine what you want to accomplish. Then ask friends and colleagues if they have worked with a coach to achieve goals similar to your own. While coaching does not require a professional license, there are a number of organizations that train or certify coaches.

To locate a coach with the specialty you’re seeking, use one of the many coaching referral services by training schools and associations. You can also easily search for a coach by using your favorite search engine, by using appropriate keywords such as “career transition coach”.

There are literally millions of coaching sites available (for example, when I searched the term “marketing coach” in Google, it generated a total of about 203,000 English pages). You have tons of coaches to choose from, so choose carefully (but don’t procrastinate). Interview two or three possible coaches for comparison. Ask about their background and the type of results they typically help clients achieve. The personal fit between client and coach is an important factor. In your initial conversation, assess not only the coach’s ability to assist you in reaching your goals but how comfortable you feel interacting with him or her. Some coaches also offer complimentary coaching sessions for prospective clients so you can experience what it would be like to work with them.

A: There are no rules about how much a coach can charge. The typical investment for individual coaching is $300 to $600 USD per month for a series of regular weekly scheduled sessions. To achieve significant results, most coaches ask that clients commit to work with them for at least three months. The investment for group coaching may be less per person, depending on the program design.

A: Coaching clients experience a sense of partnership and support in achieving their personal goals that is often not available elsewhere in their lives. Regular coaching sessions provide clients with dedicated time to focus on what they truly want and what must happen to create it. Coaches help their clients design action steps to meet their goals, then hold them accountable to their own stated desires, providing perspective, feedback, and smart questions along the way. As a result, clients stay motivated, make significant changes, and achieve more than they may have thought possible.

A: Coaching differs from consulting because the coach’s primary role is not to give advice or design solutions. Coaches ask questions and suggest alternatives that guide clients to discover their own unique answers and choose their own path. A coach may provide ideas, expertise, and skill-building techniques, but doesn’t solve clients’ problems for them, nor tell them what to do.

Coaching differs from teaching in that the coach doesn’t determine what the client will learn, nor provide a curriculum to be followed. The client decides what he or she needs to know, and the coach facilitates learning by providing accountability, feedback, helpful resources, or useful models.

Coaching differs from therapy because coaching sessions are primarily focused on learning and achievement, rather than healing or resolution. Coaches help clients to make changes in their lives by observing present conditions, visualizing future goals, and determining action steps. Analyzing past events, understanding emotional reactions, or determining the cause of a client’s behavior are typically not addressed in coaching.

Today marks day one of the 10th annual International Coaching Week.

I wanted to do a super-duper special week-long event to celebrate ICW, but didn’t get around to actually putting a plan together. (Next year, I’ll have to do my planning well before the holidays.)

I didn’t want to drop out of the celebration completely, so I’ll post a daily coaching FAQ in hopes of answering the most common questions that come up about the coaching industry.

Here are the questions I’ll be answering:

Today is the last day of Coaching Week. I hope you’ve enjoyed the interviews and I hope you are more clear on what coaching is an dhow it can help you.

For this last day of Coaching Week, I’m highlighting Executive Coaching. Monikah J. Ogando is an Executive Coach from South Florida. She has been coaching for over 6 years, and she is a closet poet. She’s even won spoken word competitions. There’s an inner Maya Angelou trying to get out.

Monikah, why did you choose Executive Coaching?
I chose executive and business coaching because I’m very passionate about entrepreneurship. I think small business is the bloodline of the economy and anybody who works for small business success is contributing on a large scale… not just in terms of profits or the economy, but think about it… People starting a business or leading a Fortune 500 company are expressing their gifts, talents, experience, passion. If someone is at the helm of a business and does NOT feel passion or joy about what they are contributing in the world, then something is off… and they call me

Who’s your Target Market?
I coach small business owners and high level executives (directors, vice presidents, c-level) on creating relationships and systems that make “running a business” a smooth process. Not effortless. It will never be effortless. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle!

Monikah, would you share with us your 30-second intro?
You know how small business owners and executives are always putting out fires and never seem to have time to be proactive about the growth of their companies? They end up feeling like they can never make real progress and feel burned out. I coach them in creating relationships, building and growing a team and establishing systems and procedures that has THEM in charge of running their business, instead of their businesses running them.

How do you describe what coaching is to someone who’s not exactly sure what a coach does?
Coaching to me is the secret weapon of extraordinary performers. Anyone who is playing a big game, whether in their personal relationships, in their business, or even a sport, is actively engaged with or looking for a coach. A coach is a partner, provides accountability and sees you bigger than how you may see yourself, to give you a bigger possibility to true up to.

What is the greatest myth you hear about coaching, and what’s your reply?
I hear people say that their lives are good so they don’t need a coach. The assumption there is that you only want a coach when there is “something wrong”. But the opposite is true. Successful people are always seeking to take themselves to the next level. It’s fear that keeps us boxed in — almost like we don’t want to lose what we DO have, so we don’t want to move too fast, jump too high…. Working with a coach helps you make that leap.

In your opinion, what’s the greatest value of working with an Executive Coach?
High level executives and business owners are usually the GO TO person in their companies, so they don’t have someone they can GO TO themselves. Working with a coach helps them have that sounding board, that accountability partner, that they may want but don’t have access to within their staff or colleagues.

How much do you charge per month? Why is your fee worth it?
My fees range from $500 – $1,000 per month, depending on the program and how deeply my clients wants to partner up with me. Why is my fee worth it? Think about this: What’s the price you’re paying for the way things are now? Is your health suffering? Peace of mind? Is your marriage at risk? Do your children really know you and spend time with you? Or are you still running around putting out fires? It takes courage and a willingness to risk to face up to those prices… But it is THAT courage that has people take themselves to the next level and create extraordinary results in their lives.

How are you celebrating Coaching Week?
I am taking out some clients to lunch

Well, Coaching Week is almost over. I hope you’ve enjoyed the interviews so far. Today, the accent is on Career Coaching. And helping me do so is Tammy Landau, Chief Action Officer of Summit Professional Coaching.

Tammy, let’s start with an introduction.

My name is Tammy Landau and I am a “not so typical” Career Coach. I live in Gilbert, AZ a suburb of Phoenix and have been coaching for about a year now. I am an expert at career change and transition but my specialty and passion lie in helping women become UNEMPLOYED! My lofty goal is to help 1 million women become unemployed. I specialize in moving women from working for someone to working for themselves and transitioning into a FT entrepreneur.

Why did you choose Career Coaching, and why is it different from other fields?
Career Coaching really spoke to my heart and I knew this was the specific niche I wanted to fill to help as many women as I could. Career coaching really focuses on a person’s career path but your career affects everything else around you. Since you spend the majority of your waking hours in your career, if your not happy or if your downright miserable in your career it really affects you financially, spiritually, socially and physically.

Who’s your Target Market, specifically?
I did not want to be a career coach that helped with assessments, resumes, interview questions or any of the traditional things you think about with career coaches. There is certainly nothing wrong with coaching this way, but my passion lies in helping women take the baby steps necessary to move into the realm of entrepreneur. There are many different methods of career coaching but no one was really coaching women to transition from employee to employer. My target market is primarily women over 35 who want to start a business but don’t really know the steps to take. They don’t have the proper road map to move forward and take the big leap.

Would you share with us your 30-second intro?
My 30-second intro is “I am helping 1 million women lose their jobs!” I help women transition from a regular job to owning their own customized business, whatever that looks like for them. I help them to become entrepreneurs.

Tammy, what does coaching mean to you? How do you explain what coaching is to someone who doesn’t quite get it?
Coaching to me is a way to move forward in your life by having a non-judgmental and objective person ask you the right questions and help you write your road map (based on your answers) in order to move you forward towards your goals. It’s important to note the non-judgmental/objective piece because your “Mom” or “Aunt Emma” certainly will be biased in giving you advice based on the fact that they changed your diapers! Coaching is simply a way to get you where you want to be — faster.

What is the greatest objection you hear about coaching? How do you overcome this?
The greatest objection I hear is that coaching is expensive. I overcome this objection easily by pointing out to people that staying in a career you hate, a career that is affecting every fiber of your being, a career that jeopardizes your relationships, your health, and your finances – How Expensive is That? It’s amazing, but people suddenly realize it’s up to them to change and their $5.00/day latte habit is out the window and they miraculously have the finances to INVEST in themselves, because this is an investment.

In your opinion, what’s the greatest value of working with a Career Coach?
The greatest value of working with a career coach is that you will be working 30-40-50 years of your life. Having someone help you hone what it is that makes you truly happy, joyful and passionate and finding out a way to get paid for it is priceless!

What is your monthly fee?
I charge $325/month for (3) 50 minute sessions or $275/month for (2) 50 minute sessions but I also offer a variety of other programs that may work better for some people such as group coaching.

Are you doing anything special for Coaching Week?
I am celebrating coaching week by sharing my favorite quote which to me encapsulates coaching quite nicely, “It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who your really are.” — EE Cummings. And if I might add, “turning out to be who your really are” can be discovered faster with a Great Coach!

You sound so passionate about what you do, Tammy. I love to hear that, and I guess it’s important to show that you’re practicing what you preach! How can we contact you?
